An old purchase may not cover the next upgrade
MarginNote 3 App Store users have paid, discounted upgrade paths to version 4. On iPhone and iPad, moving to Pro and then Max can involve another upgrade payment. Existing Mac DMG licenses can move to Standard for free, but the Premium pack costs extra. The issue is added spending across major versions, tiers and channels, not a claim that every update is paid.
Device and channel licenses complicate the total
MarginNote Pro excludes Mac, while Mac DMG licenses exclude iPhone and iPad. Existing DMG users adding iOS have a separate App Store Pro purchase path. Costs depend on the tier and channel; not every device requires a duplicate purchase. Still, upgrades and expanded device access need separate budgeting, and Apple access does not solve Windows or Android reading needs.
